What is a contralto?

A contralto is the lowest female voice type, typically characterized by a rich and deep tone. Contraltos have a vocal range that usually falls between the F below middle C to the second G above middle C.

Contraltos are known for their warm and resonant sound, often described as having a darker timbre than other female voice types. They are often able to sing in the lower register with power and richness, making them well-suited for roles in opera, musical theater, and choral music that require a strong, low voice.

Famous contraltos include singers such as Marian Anderson, Kathleen Ferrier, and Ewa Podles. In opera, contraltos often portray roles such as witches, villains, and older female characters due to the depth and richness of their voices.

Contraltos are a rare voice type, and many singers who believe they are contraltos may actually fall into the mezzo-soprano category, which is a more common female voice type with a higher range.
